New Quiz Thingy!!
A really bad day!
Well, I say really bad day, but in all honesty, yesterday was a very bad day for me.
Working as a security officer, we are contracted out to various different companies, known as 'clients'. My site is a local NHS Primary Care Trust - a small part of the UK's overall National Health network. Yesterday, management informed me that after the end of March, they wont be requiring security any more. To have security manning their reception desk, greeting visitors etc "doesn't fit the corporate image." They forget all the other little jobs we do - such as safety of the building and the doctors, nurses and other staff within. But anyway.
It hasn't been a problem the last 3 or 4 years so why now? Money, basically. It all comes down to money. Money over rules common sense every time. Basically the PCT can't afford to keep us on. Never mind that they've got over one and a half million pounds to spend before the end of the tax year in April. The security of the building and staff welfare seems to have been overlooked by those up high.
It was a real kick in the guts, let me tell you. I love working here. The staff are great to work with/for. The building is 10 minutes walk from home. I love my job here. I don't want to leave, but if I stay with my employers, G4S Security, I don't have any say in the matter.
And this is where the next part of my bad day comes in. I don't drive, so when G4S find me another site, it has to be local, or within reasonable travelling distance - for example somewhere I can walk to/from or get a bus to/from at 6 in the morning (a lot of 12 hour shifts tend to start/finish at 6am). Trouble is, they've lost the contracts of a lot of local sites over the past couple years, and there isn't anywhere for me. So until something comes up, from April onwards, I could be sitting around waiting for a phone call to say some one has gone sick somewhere so I might get a single days work in a month. And while I'm waiting for that call, not getting paid because I wont be working.
When you got bills, rent, loans to pay, that really isn't an option. So I've got to start job hunting. And that can be a difficult and laborious task. One bright spark out of all this though - there is the (faint) possibility of a reception post within the PCT that I may be able to take. But I need to speak to HR next week, so wont know any more about that till then.
But to make my bad day even worse, I got into a situation last night which resulted in the possibility of a complaint being lodged against me - all because I was trying to do my job! A woman and her son came to be seen for treatment, but she parked in a spot where the ambulances normally park, and her son parked in a bay clearly marked for staff. So doing my job, I asked them politely if they would mind moving their cars to one of the side streets or the pay and display car park the other side of the road.
The woman didn't like that! Started ranting and raving, she went in to complain to the staff, called me a "intimidating, jumped up little shit". She spoke to the patient advice and liaison officer, and took the name of the person that deals with complaints so she could lodge one against me. All because I asked her and her son to move their two cars! Hopefully nothing will come of it, and I do have support from everyone that witnessed it. I was even told I could lodge a counter complaint because the PCT has a zero tolerence policy against people that abuse its staff. I really felt like telling her to go forth and multiply, chucking my ID badge in the bin and walking off site. But I couldn't - it goes against my professional ethics. I'm better than that.
So there you have it - the tale of my bad day! In 7 weeks there's the possibility I'll be out of work for the first time in two and a half years, and I got a grievance being put in against me too.
Can only get better from here on in, right?

Morning all!
Hope you all had a good and blessed Yule. Mine was ok - except I worked most of it! Will get onto that in a bit though.
First, I'd like to recall a little tale. Because I worked Xmas day and Boxing day, I took the New calender Years week off. New Years Eve, I travelled from my home in the North East of the UK, down to see my family in the South. In Kent and London. Because we live so far apart, I don't get to see them that often, so it was good to spend some time with them. I needed to get away for a bit - and what better way than spending it with your loved ones?!
I lodged with my dad and step-mum for four days, and in those four days, New years eve party was fun. I visited a lot of family over the next few days. On the Tuesday I went to see my Grandad and my Nan - who I haven't seen since she had her stroke last summer. And I'll tell you, it really pulled my heart strings. I've not seen either of them as run down and helpless/needy (horrible words, but I can't think of any others to describe it) as they are at the moment. They're doing well though - as well as can be expected anyhow. Coping I think is the best description I could use.
After that, went for a bit of shopping and lunch with my brother, and then on to visit my two cousins and their families. Both have young sons, and they're sooooo cute!! Had a great time. On the Wednesday went with my dad to see my other Nan. Haven't seen her in over a year, so that was good. Went to see my step-sisters new house Wednesday night. Needs some serious DIY but it's a good pad! Then after that, we had a boys night - me, my dad and my brother went ten pin bowling. I'm useless and got thrashed every frame! But it's not about the competition, it's about the bonding. The three of us don't often get time on our own any more, so I enjoyed the night. Thursday was just a lazy slobbing around the house type day, before I left my dads on the Friday, travelled up to London, went to visit some old work collegues (some of who I miss more than I realised) before meeting my mum and crashing at her flat over night. Haven't seen mum in almost a year either.
Travelled back up North last Saturday. 4 hours of travelling gave me a lot of thinking time. I began to wonder if I should move back. The week away made me realise just how much I miss my family and my old friends and work colleagues. Took me a while (three or four days), but I slowly began to realise that I've built a life up here now, and if I went back, it'd be more for their sakes. Not mine. And that is the wrong way to go about things. So I decided to stay. Follow your instincts as a good friend told me, and you wont go far wrong.
Where does work fit in? Well, came back to work this week. We got our December payslips yesterday. Normally, you think you'd get double time for working over Xmas, right? I done a 12 hour shift Xmas day, and the same Boxing day. Double time I thought. Well worth it. Looked at my payslip. No chance. Just normal rate. NOT HAPPY!!! I'm not the only one though. It seems to have happened to a lot of G4S Security staff across the board (I think just in our region, not necessarily nation or world wide). My supervisor is owed 12 hours, I'm owed 24 hours, and Jason, the other guard is owed 12. There is going to be ructions on Monday. Our manager is coming down, so he'll get it both barrells. My supervisor is getting our Union involved, and he's threatening to tell the Cheif Executive and the Facilities manager of our client. And if he does that, anything could happen. But if we don't get the money oweing to us within the next two weeks (G4S are notorious for taking their time over money owed to staff) then we'll walk. And then they will be up the creek without a paddle. We've all had enough of being mucked around and taken the p out of.
Enough is enough. Watch this space...........
